self portraits
Studio:
The lighting in the shot was from directly in front of me. This accounts for the dramatic lighting on my face. This lighting adds interest into the picture. The model (me) is sitting on a chair holding a camera down low behind the light. You can see more of the torso of my body, however it blends into the black background. The photo itself was taken vertically, from straight ahead. The picture was from roughly 5 feet away. The lighting portrays darkness in the personality of the model. It also could represent how he feels like he brings light to the darkness. I made the background black after quickly seeing the potential. If I were to leave it as a light grey, the picture would be less dramatic. Compared to the pictures with a lighter background, the light in the front really emphasized the dramatic shot of my face.
Self:
I set the camera on a timer and moved onto the hill. The picture was shot on the top of Bretton Woods with Mt. Washington in the background. The picture was taken in the middle of the day. I tried to incorporate the rule of thirds in lining myself up on the upper left intersection with the mountains along the top line of he thirds. The technical components were only what my phone is set to, as I did not tinker with anything. I took the photograph of me on a snowboard in NH because I’m an avid skier/snowboarder and I go up to do both frequently. The picture came out much better than I thought it would and I’m very proud of how it came out. This is a portrait and not a selfie because there are no arms involved in the picture. I did no take it from a foot away, I took it from like 10.
